Clifton Down

In the Middle Ages, Clifton Down was a common pasture for the manor of Clifton. In 1676 and 1686 the manor of Clifton was purchased by the Society of Merchant Venturers.

The roots of The Merchant Venturers go back to the 13th century. They were established in the current form in 1552 by Royal Charter from Edward VI giving them a monopoly on Bristol sea trade. There were successive decrees by monarchs such as Charles I, Charles II and Queen Elizabeth I that lasted until 1809. Over time they have funded many institutions. Notably, John Cabot’s voyage to Canada in 1552. They had a hand in the construction of the Suspension Bridge and the Great Western Railway. They also influenced the development of education through the local schools and universities.

During the 18th century, Clifton became a fashionable summer spa, and Clifton Down was increasingly used for recreation. At the southernmost point of Clifton Down is an idyllic green flanked by Litfield Place, Harley Place and Christ Church. …
